Questionnement général et axes de recherche -Questionnement général et axes de recherche Nos thématiques de recherche concernent l’étude de la « prise de décision » et de la valeur adaptative des comportements chez les animaux. Plusieurs axes structurent la recherche du groupe (pour plus de détails voir les pages personnelles des chercheurs et enseignants–chercheurs impliqués) :
Sélection sexuelle et choix des partenaires :
Dans cette thématique nous cherchons à discriminer la part relative de l’hypothèse des bons gènes et de l’hypothèse de compatibilité génétique dans le choix du partenaire sexuel. Plusieurs questions guident nos travaux : quel sexe choisit ? quels sont les signaux ou combinaisons de signaux (approches comportementale et d’écologie chimique) et les canaux de communication utilisés ? les signaux sont-ils honnêtes et en quoi renseignent-ils sur la qualité (phénotypique ou génétique) des partenaires potentiels ? Quelles sont les conséquences en termes de succès reproducteur des choix de partenaires ? En quoi le choix des partenaires impacte la dynamique de populations ?
Evolution des structures sociales :
Les études en cours s’attachent à comprendre via des approches observationnelles sur le long terme (capture-marquage recapture), les facteurs d’établissement et de perte de la dominance dans les groupes sociaux. Des questions concernant la taille optimale du groupe sociale et sa composition en « helpers » (subordonnés aidants) sont abordées. Enfin, des développements méthodologiques sont en cours pour étudier via des modèles Individus Centrés les facteurs responsables de l’évolution de la socialité et de la taille des groupes dans une population.
Cognition.
Cette thématique transversale dans l’équipe est pour nous l’occasion d’explorer la diversité des informations utilisées par les animaux (informations privées, publiques, présentes et passées) pour comprendre comment ces animaux hiérarchisent les informations perçues et comment cette information est traduite en comportement. L’utilisation contexte-dépendante des informations est abordée pour comprendre la flexibilité des réponses comportementales (contextes environnementaux externe ou interne (« state-dependency »)). Les capacités cognitives des animaux sont explorées au travers des expériences dédiées à la compréhension de l’apprentissage, de la résolution de problèmes, de la gestion du compromis entre vitesse et précision (lors de la prise de décision) dans le cadre de l’exploitation de ressources. On cherche à comprendre à la fois l’origine et les conséquences évolutives de la variation dans les capacités cognitives des individus au niveau intraspécifique et comment les pressions de sélection s’exercent sur ces traits.
Sélection des ressources et dispersion (items alimentaires et habitat) :
Une partie de nos travaux s’inscrit dans le cadre de l’écologie de la nutrition et de la sélection d’habitat. Quelles ressources sont sélectionnées ? Quels sont les coûts et bénéfices en termes de succès reproducteur liées à l’exploitation de ces ressources ? Quels sont les compromis impliqués dans la recherche et l’exploitation des ressources (e.g. reproduction immédiate et reproduction différée) ? La sélection d’habitat et la dispersion sont un des thèmes centraux et sont très développés avec le bagage et le suivi à long termes des populations de passereaux. Les informations utilisées pour la sélection d’habitat, les coûts physiologiques, les effets maternels sur la dispersion ont été explorés. Actuellement des travaux sont en cours pour décrire les syndromes comportementaux (personnalité) et physiologiques (activité métabolique, stress oxydatif) liés à la dispersion et leurs conséquences en termes de valeur adaptative et de dynamique des populations. Enfin, des travaux sont menés sur les conséquences de la dispersion sur la structuration de populations dans un système hôte-parasite avec plusieurs espèces d’hôtes et la possibilité pour les parasites de se spécialiser.
Bases moléculaires des comportements et architecture génétique :
Cette thématique débute dans notre groupe et va prendre de l’ampleur dans les années à venir. Après avoir développé une approche de génétique du comportement (approche « gène candidat » pour étudier la variabilité comportementale lors de l’approvisionnement, de la dispersion et la variabilité des capacités cognitives), nous mettons en œuvre des approches « omiques » (e.g. transcriptomique) pour décrire la variabilité phénotypique et les mécanismes sous-jacents. Notre objectif à moyen terme est de décrire l’architecture des gènes pilotant les histoires de vie et plus spécifiquement les comportements afin de comprendre l’interaction génotype x environnement et donc de comprendre la valeur adaptative des réponses phénotypique et leur flexibilité. Notre cible d’étude demeure la réponse phénotypique (principalement le comportement) individuelle mais notre approche se veut résolument intégrative. Ainsi, nous avons, depuis quelques années, développé des travaux pour identifier les mécanismes qui sous-tendent ces réponses phénotypiques, leur flexibilité et leur variation inter individuelle.
Pour répondre à cet objectif, nous avons développé des méthodes d’écophysiologie (afin d’étudier par exemple l’allocation d’énergie, les effets maternels, suivre dans le temps les constantes physiologiques grâce à des bio-loggers,…), d’écologie chimique (étude des signaux impliqués dans le choix des partenaires sexuels), de génétique quantitative (héritabilité de certains traits d’histoire de vie tels que la dispersion ou les traits de personnalité) et depuis peu nous développons la génétique du comportement et la transcriptomique (plus généralement les « omiques » appliquées au comportement) pour comprendre par exemple, les bases moléculaires qui sous-tendent le choix des partenaires.
Les conséquences des réponses individuelles sur la dynamique des populations sont explorées via la modélisation (système dynamiques, EDO, simulations,..). De même les réponses évolutives sont abordées à travers des modèles de dynamique adaptative.

Quels modèles biologiques et sites d’étude ? -Quels modèles biologiques et sites d’étude ? L’équipe de recherche travaille principalement sur 3 modèles biologiques :- les marmottes (Marmota marmota),
- des oiseaux passereaux (la mésange, Parus major, le gobe-mouche à collier Ficedula albicollis et le cincle plongeur, Cinclus cinclus)
- des insectes parasitoïdes, Venturia canescens (Hymenoptera : ichneumonidae), des phytophages, Drosophila suzukii, Curculio elephas (Coleoptera : curculionidae) et des Triatomines, punaises hématophages (Heteroptera : reduviidae)).
Cette diversité des modèles biologiques constitue un atout qui permet de tester, avec le modèle biologique le plus pertinent, les hypothèses et prédictions issus du corpus conceptuel de l’écologie évolutive et comportementale.
Nos données proviennent d’expérimentations au laboratoire et sur le terrain et aussi de suivis à long terme des individus et populations en conditions naturelles (parc de la Vanoise pour les marmottes, îles de Gotland, Suède pour les passereaux cavicoles et parc de Chartreuse en région Rhône Alpes pour le cincle, Mexique pour les triatomines). Ces suivis à long terme représentent un investissement conséquent mais constituent une véritable plus-value pour comprendre les réponses adaptatives des animaux face aux changements de leur environnement.

Les personnels de l’équipe -Les personnels de l’équipe Notre groupe comprend actuellement 9 chercheurs ou Enseignants-chercheurs dont 4 HDR :- Dominique Allainé (Prof., Lyon 1), Aurélie Cohas (MCU, Lyon 1) et Marie-Pierre Callait-Cardinal (MCU, VetAgoSup) focalisent leur recherche sur la marmotte alpine,
- Blandine Doligez (CR CNRS, HDR) étudie le comportement des oiseaux,
- Isabelle Amat (MCU, Lyon 1), Aurore Gallot-Legrand (MCU, Lyon 1), Etienne Rajon (MCU, Lyon 1), Frédéric Menu (Prof., Lyon 1) et Emmanuel Desouhant (Prof., Lyon 1) s’intéressent l’évolution des traits d’histoire de vie et aux comportements des insectes.
La partie expérimentale bénéficie de l’aide des personnels techniques de l’unité et en particulier de : François Debias, Sylvia Pardonnet, Benjamin Rey et Sandrine Sauzet.
Nos recherchent s’inscrivent dans un réseau de collaborateurs en France et à l’international : Argentine, Suède, Suisse, Espagne, Finlande, Royaume-Uni, Canada…

Le fonctionnement de l’équipe -Le fonctionnement de l’équipe Toutes les 3 semaines, le groupe se réunit pour discuter d’un papier (« Journal Club ») ou pour présenter les travaux en cours au sein du groupe. Ces réunions permettent de croiser les regards d’écologistes du comportement et de l’évolution travaillant sur des systèmes biologiques différents.
Les recherches du groupe sont très majoritairement financées sur projet (ANR, région Rhône-Alpes, Fédération de Recherche UCBL (FR41, https://listes.universite-lyon.fr:8443/mailman/listinfo/bioenvis), ONCFS, PICS CNRS…) et bénéficient du soutien financier récurrent de nos organismes de tutelles.
Une partie de nos recherches sont aussi soutenues par des entreprises privées ou organisations internationales : bourses de thèse CIFRE (Bayer), AXA, EarthWatch (www.earthwatch.org ; programme Marmottes alpines jusqu’en 2014). Ce mode de financement fait écho à nos résultats qui sont en phase avec les demandes sociétales concernant les changements climatiques et la gestion de la faune sauvage (voir liste de publications).
