L'objectif principal du département GECO est de promouvoir et de renforcer l'intégration et les synergies entre les développements théoriques et méthodologiques pertinents. pour l'analyse des génomes (génomique dite computationnelle) et l'analyse empirique des données génomiques et multi-omiques (génomique évolutive et fonctionnelle). Le département est structuré en deux équipes, BAOBAB et BPGE.

BAOBAB est une équipe fondamentalement orientée vers l'informatique. Ses forces sont en algorithmique, en modélisation et en analyse mathématique des graphes et des réseaux, avec des applications à la transcriptomique et aux réseaux métaboliques.

BPGE conduit une recherche en bioinformatique, en phylogénie et en génomique évolutive. Ses projets de recherche couvrent une large gamme de problématiques, telles que le développement de méthodes d'inférence phylogénétique, l'application de la phylogénie à la reconstruction de l'évolution des bactéries ou des archées, le rôle des éléments génétiques mobiles dans l'évolution des bactéries et de l'antibio-résistance, et le rôle de la recombinaison, des réarrangements génomiques et des éléments transposables dans l'évolution des génomes eukaryotes.

Comme détaillé sur leurs pages respectives, la recherche menée dans les deux équipes intègre à la fois des développements théoriques et méthodologiques (algorithmiques et computationnels) avec l'analyse de données empiriques, elle-même motivée par des questions empiriques. Cette intégration est bi-directionnelle: les développements méthodologiques sont guidés par les questions empiriques et sont ensuite utilisés dans les applications aux données, tandis que la modélisation théorique aide à la clarification de la base conceptuelle des analyses empiriques subséquentes.
